McDaniel Edges Buffalo State to Win Abgott Invitational Championship
BUFFALO, NYMcDaniel (MD) improved to 2-0 on the season as it needed overtime to beat host Buffalo State (1-1) 65-62 to claim the Betty Abgott Invitational. In the tourneys consolation game, Farmingdale (1-1) defeated Penn State Altoona (0-2) 66-59.
McDaniel overcame an 11-point deficit with 9:04 to play to force overtime with a three-pointer by Jacqueline Pundt (Mt. Airy, MD/Western Tech) with 36 seconds to play, evening the score at 59-59. In the extra period, Brooke Weimer (Williamsport, MD/Williamsport) hit three free throws down the stretch to give the Green Terror the three-point victory. Katy Powell (Smithsburg, MD/Smithsburg) led McDaniel with 11 points, and Kristy Costa (Galloway, NJ/Absegami), Kelly Cramp (Pennington, NJ/Hopewell Valley) and Pundt all scored nine. Monique Hanks (Liverpool/Liverpool) led Buffalo State with 14 points and 11 rebounds, while freshman Darnika Moseley (Liverpool/Liverpool) set a new school record for rebounds in a game with 26, including 12 at the offensive end, and also added eight points. Beth Hogan (Great Valley/Salamanca) tallied 16 points, and Marcy Dankovich (Celoron/Southwestern) added 13 points.
In the consolation game, Farmingdale earned its first win of the season, slipping past Penn State Altoona by a 66-59 margin. Jennifer McKenzie (Brooklyn, NY) led Farmingdales offense with 15 points and tallied 10 rebounds. Karen King (New York, NY) chipped in nine points and 12 boards. Lindsey Barr (Altoona, PA/Altoona) led three Lions in double-figures with 18 points and seven boards. Erin Shields (Hollidaysburg, PA/Bishop Guilfoyle) added 16 points, and Tara Stock (Martinsburg, PA/Central) added 11 points.
