Men's Basketball Tops Cortland for 1,000th Win
BUFFALO, NY—Buffalo State (10-11/5-8) ended its seven-game losing skid to pick up its 1,000th victory as a varsity program with a 72-69 win over visiting Cortland (8-14/4-9) in a SUNYAC game tonight at the Sports Arena.
DJ Nubine-Mitchell (Marina, CA/Seaside) led Buffalo State with a career-high 23 points, including hitting 4 of 7 from 3-point range. Bubba Wood (Brooklyn/Abraham Lincoln) had 22 points and four assists, and John Lawal (Hempstead/Uniondale) added 10.
Mike Lewis and Juan Miolan led a balanced Cortland attack with 13 points each. Three other Red Dragons scored 12.
Cortland led by as many as nine in the opening half, but
Buffalo State used a late 8-0 run to close the opening frame down just 33-30. The Bengals opened the second period with a 15-4 run and went up by eight, but the teams would trade leads for much of the final half, before Buffalo State finally took the lead for good with just over two minutes remaining. Cortland cut the deficit to one with four seconds remaining on a desperation 3-pointer by Dave Jutton, but Wood knocked down a pair of free throws to seal the win.
Buffalo State will host New Paltz tomorrow at 5 p.m.
