Men's Basketball Wins Holiday Inn Title
BUFFALO, NY--Buffalo State (7-3) scored 50 points in the second half to take an 84-66 victory over D'Youville (3-9) tonight in the championship game of the Buffalo State Holiday Inn Invitational. Hilbert (1-10) rallied to beat Medaille (1-9), 72-69, in the consolation game.
In the championship contest, Buffalo State trailed the entire first half did not take the lead for good until 8:43 remaining, before sprinting to the 18-point win. Twin brothers Justin and Jeremy Konst (Williamsville East) combined for 29 of the Bengals points, scoring 16 and 13 respectively. Tournament MVP Josh Becker (Frontier) added 15 points, and Perry Davis (Seneca) scored 14 points and grabbed 10 rebounds. Ian Morris led three Spartans in double-figures with 16 points. Chris Mays (Silver Creek) tallied 11 points, and Sanquin Starks (Niagara Falls) added 10.
Medaille squandered a late lead for the second straight day in the consolation game, as Hilbert overcame an eight point deficit with just over three minutes remaining to earn its first win of the season. Warren Walters led the Hawks with 23 points, and Sean Kenney added 20 points and eight boards. Tim McCormick (Bishop Timon) was dominant in the paint for the Mavericks as he scored 23 points and pulled down a tournament record 17 rebounds. Rene Smith (South Park) pitched in 21 point and nine rebounds in the losing effort.
