Music Department Announces 2010 Faculty and Friends Concert Series

The Buffalo State Music Department has announced its 2010 Faculty and Friends Concert Series—a diverse set of classical performances including both masterworks and new compositions.

September 7

Bryan Boyce, assistant professor of piano, performs a recital in celebration of the newly restored Mason & Hamlin concert grand piano. The program marks the world premiere of Redshift, a new piece for prepared piano and electronic sounds by composer and faculty member J. Tomas Henriques, and also includes works by Bach, Busoni, Schubert, Debussy, and Chopin.

September 29
The Buffalo State Faculty Woodwind Trio features professor Crystal Reinoso (clarinet), Marlene Witnauer (flute), and Ellen Barnum (bassoon) performing works by Mozart, Piston, Faillenot, and Villa-Lobos.

October 1
The Clara String Quartet, a Buffalo State faculty ensemble in residence, includes Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra members Amy Glidden (violin), Jacqueline Galluzzo (violin), Kate Holzemer (viola), and Amelie Fradette (cello). They will be joined by Buffalo State vocal coordinator Holly Bewlay (soprano), and staff accompanist Susan Schuman (piano). The program includes the music of Dmitri Shostakovich and Roberto Sierra. 

November 2 
    

The fourth annual Lois R. Klein Piano Recital features world-acclaimed pianist Steven Mark Heyman performing "Sonatas from the Masters," including Haydn, Brahms, and Prokofiev. Very active in new music, Heyman has performed worldwide and is a frequent artist on top recording labels. In 2010, he will be featured on three CD's, Echoes on Centaur Records, featuring debut recordings of works for viola and piano with Laura Klugherz, and two others for Innova Recordings dedicated to new music commissioned by the Society for New Music.

Michael Hernandez, saxophonist and nationally distinguished member of the award-winning Mana Saxophone Quartet.

February 24, 2011 

The K2 Violin Duo consists of BPO violinists Frances Kaye and Richard Kay. They will be joined by Paul Ferington (piano), conductor of the Buffalo State College Philharmonia community orchestra and a BPO staff conductor for more than 25 years. The program includes the music of Boccherini, Bartok, Mozart, and Moszkowski.

All concerts take place at the Performing Arts Center at Rockwell Hall at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $10 for general admission and free to all students and can be purchased at www.buffalostate.edu/pac, by phone at (716) 878-3005, or in person at the Rockwell Hall Box Office (during office hours and two hours prior to performances) beginning August 18.
