New York—State of the Art: The 2004 Burchfield-Penney Art Center Gala and Auction
The Burchfield-Penney Art Center's Annual Auction and Gala will be held on October 1, 2004 in the Mary Seaton Room at Kleinhans Music Hall. In conjunction with the exhibition, New York Collects Buffalo State, this year's theme is New York—State of the Art. Co-chairs of the event are Jayne Rand, Calvin Rand and Dr. Charles Rand Penney. Dr. Muriel A. Howard, president of Buffalo State College, is honorary chairperson of the event.
A silent auction during the cocktail hour will be enhanced once again by a special prize wheel and a spirited live auction led by Cash Cunningham following dinner. This year, the auctions will feature works by artists in the Burchfield-Penney's collection as well as a terrific assortment of items generously donated local businesses. Artists represented in both auctions include Milton Rogovin, Charles Clough, John Pfahl, Wes Olmsted, Joe Piccillo, Bruce Adams and Robert Blair.
Each year, one of the highlights of the live auction is a painting created by a first-time artist under the tutelage of watercolor artist Rita Argen Auerbach. In previous years, she has helped Dr. Charles Rand Penney, Dr. Muriel A. Howard, Patrick Fagan, William Magavern, Lauren Belfer, Larry Levite, Douglas Schultz and JoAnn Falletta to create masterpieces for the Gala's live auction. The ninth Sunday painter to join this esteemed group is James Brandys, past president of the Burchfield-Penney's Board of Trustees. The painting depicts the H.H. Richardson towers.
