No less an authority than Western New York’s legendary meteorologist Don Paul cites Steve Vermette, professor of geography and planning, regarding the ice boom’s effect on this year’s long-lasting winter.

Paul wrote in the Buffalo News, “Evidence: nada.”

The 2005 study, by Vermette and then-graduate student Mark LaRussa, concluded: “There is no evidence to support perceptions that the ice boom has retarded ice dissipation or has caused a cooling of air temperatures in Buffalo during the spring months.”
