Robin Harris, associate professor of science education, explained the goals and challenges of teaching science to immigrant and refugee children to WBFO reporter Ashley Hirtzel. Hirtzel also spoke to Kirby Coffman, a senior majoring in elementary education, who talked about bridging both cultural and language gaps. At one point, Buffalo State students acted out the metamorphosis of a butterfly using music and dance. Coffman said that the activity, part of a service-learning class, was both rewarding and useful. “It was really good for me to get a good initial grasp of what I’m going to be challenged with in the classroom,” said Coffman.
