In the News: Weighing In on Protein Bars

Carol DeNysschen, associate professor in dietetics and nutrition, was quoted in a recent New York Times article, “A Look Inside the Protein Bar.” The article discusses the new trend of protein enhanced snack bars. The added protein supposedly makes you feel full, and can help with overeating.

“Many bars have the same calories and protein as a turkey sandwich,” said DeNysschen, “and I think people will be more satisfied with the sandwich.” While people do need protein, a Buffalo State study measured the effects of exercising with protein supplements. The results showed that participants who exercised and gained protein from natural sources were just as successful as the groups using supplements.
