No. 23 Rochester Takes Two From Softball
ROCHESTER, NY—No. 23-ranked University of Rochester (17-10) needed to work extra innings, but eventually completed a two-game sweep over visiting Buffalo State (15-9) today, winning 5-1 and 6-5 in 10 innings.
Buffalo State took the early, scoring on a Jessica Mooney (Tonawanda/ Kenmore West) RBI single just two batters into the game, after Arielle Austin (Smithtown/ Smithtown West) singled and advanced on an error to open the game. The Bengals mustered just two hits the rest of the way, and the Yellowjackets plated three runs in the fifth and two more in the sixth. Mooney finished 2 for 3. Jenna Frieling (E. Amherst/ Williamsville North) took the loss, allowing nine hits and four earned runs with four strikeouts.
The Bengals jumped out early again in the second game, taking a 4-0 lead on a grand slam by Jolene Banach (Cheektowaga/ Maryvale) before the Yellowjackets came to the plate. Rochester rallied again, however, and the score was knotted at 5-5 through seven innings before the Yellowjackets pushed the winning run home in the bottom of the 10th inning. Banach finished 2 for 4. Becky Shank (Williamsville/ Williamsville East) was 2 for 4 with a triple and an RBI. Austin and Nicole Maher (Waterloo/ Waterloo) were both 2 for 5. Frieling took the loss again, allowing five hits and one run in four innings of relief. Danielle Gaimari (N. Syracuse/ CNS) pitched five innings, allowing seven hits and two earned runs.
Buffalo State will return to the road with a SUNYAC doubleheader at Potsdam on Friday.
