No. 5 St. John Fisher Tops Football, 34-12
BUFFALO, NY—Ryan Hanson (Fulton/G. Ray Bodley) rushed for 165 yards and a touchdown on 28 carries as St. John Fisher (2-0), the No. 5 ranked team in Division III, capitalized on a fast start to top host Buffalo State (1-1), 34-12, in a non-conference game today at Coyer Field.
The Cardinals found the end zone on their first four possessions, including three touchdown passes from Rob Kramer (Oneida/Oneida). Kramer finished the day 19 of 28 for 245 yards with four touchdowns and one interception. Tim Marion (Warwick/Warwick Valley) was the leading receiver with five catches for 93 yards and a touchdown. Chris Harmon (Caledonia/Cal-Mumford) added four catches for 27 yards and a score, and Jimmy Smith (Oneida/Oneida) added three catches for 53 yards and two touchdowns.
Steve Stepnick (Cowlesville/Iroquois) led the Cardinals defense with 10 tackles. Kenny Bostick (Rochester/Aquinas) added six stops and an interception with a 62-yard return.
Buffalo State quarterback Dan Aquilio (Depew/Depew) finished 19 of 28 for 193 yards and a touchdown and two interceptions. Dan Lopez (Lancaster/St. Mary’s) led the ground attack with 22 carries for 93 yards, including a 3-yard touchdown run. Greg Meyer (Lancaster/Lancaster) paced the receiving corps with five catches for 91 yards. Dan McEntire (Hilton/Hilton) had five catches for 52 yards and a touchdown.
Tom LaPann (Glens Falls/Glens Falls) led the defense with eight stops, and Peter Nguyen (Buffalo/South Park) had seven tackles and an interception with a 66-yard return.
St. John Fisher opened the scoring just four plays and 1:23 into the game when Smith reeled in an 11-yard pass from Kramer. Buffalo State answered on its first possession with a sustained 13-play, 47-yard drive, capped by Lopez’s 3-yard touchdown plunge.
The Cardinals took over from there, however, scoring on their next three possessions, a 33-yard reception by Marion, another 33-yard reception by Smith, and a 3-yard run by Hanson midway through the second quarter to push the score to 27-6 at the intermission.
Buffalo State scored the first points of the second half on a 5-yard strike from Aquilio to McEntire with 6:25 remaining in the third quarter, but St. John Fisher responded on the ensuing possession with an 8-play drive covering 53 yards, ending with a 4-yard scoring reception by Harmon.
The Cardinals gained a total of 432 yards with 22 first downs, compared to Buffalo State’s 333 yards of total offense and 16 first downs.
Buffalo State will return to action at Cortland in two weeks. St. John Fisher will open its home schedule next Saturday when it hosts the University of Rochester.
