More than 50 master’s degrees in public relations are now offered across the United States. Public relations professionals are likely to find that earning a graduate degree can help them be more competitive especially as they pursue management positions.
Buffalo State, a State University of New York institution that offers low tuition rates for graduate programs, launched its master’s degree in public relations in fall 2016. In fall 2018, that degree will be available to new students exclusively as an online program. Students currently enrolled in the program can finish it with in-person courses in fall 2018 and spring 2019.
“The master's program provides more preparation for the management role of public relations,” said Deborah Silverman, coordinator of the master’s program and associate professor of communication. “It also requires coursework in communication theory and case studies combined with campaigns.”
The online program includes videos, email, file sharing, and discussion boards to facilitate interaction between fellow students and professors. “Our online students will learn the same coursework from the same faculty as those in our traditional program,” said Silverman. “For most students, the most important point about the online program is that they can access the coursework when it’s convenient.”
