Orosz, Hicks Win Events as Track & Field Competes at Brockport

BROCKPORT, NY--Buffalo State's track & field teams had 22 individual top-5 finishes today at the Brockport Invitational, the final tune-up before next week's SUNYAC Championships.

Mario Hicks (Corning/Corning West) led the men's side, finishing first in the 200-meter dash (22.03) and third in the 110-meter high hurdles (15.50). Shilah Richardson (Auburn/Auburn) (400-meter - 51.18), Jim Sholley (Cheektowaga/JFK) (400-meter hurdles - 57.61), Chad Laderer (N. Tonawanda/Starpoint) (triple jump - 12.21m), and John Tammaro (Cheektowaga/St. Mary's) (javelin - 49.26) all finished second in their respective events. Kyle Fenner (Plattsburgh/Plattsburgh) was fourth in the 5,000-meter run (16:43.27), Kymani Smith (Newburgh/Newburgh Free) was fourth in the triple jump (12.01m), and Jay Wingate (Henrietta/Rush-Henrietta) (high jump - 1.88m) and Josh Demars (Fulton/G. Ray Bodley) (10,000-meters - 35:43.81) each had fifth-place showings.

On the women's side, Jenelle Orosz (N. Tonawanda/N. Tonawanda) won the high jump (1.65m). Jamie Abbott (Pulaski/Pulaski) was second in the javelin (36.30), tied for third in the shot put (10.64m) and fourth in the discus (35.21m). Tiffany Aaron (Rochester/Wilson Magnet) was second in the 200-meter dash (26.05), and LaVonne Barfield (Rochester/Wilson Magnet) (triple jump - 10.88m) and Danielle Smelser (Plattsburgh/Plattsburgh) (1,500 meters - 4:59.85) each had third-place showings. Katelin Clark (Horseheads/Horseheads) was fourth in the 5,000 meters (20:28.54), Margaret Hughes (Elmira/Elmira Free) was fourth in the 10,000 meters (41:57.65), Christina Lawrence (Pittsford/Rush-Henrietta) was fifth in the 100-meter dash (13.22), and Krystyna Markut (Depew/Lancaster) was fifth in the 3,000-meter steeplechase (13:31.62). Sarah Gedraitis (Lockport/Akron) was also fifth in both the discus (34.37m) and the hammer throw (38.87m). Also, Dana Migliorino (Wayne, NJ/Wayne Valley) and Nichia Horvath (Syracuse/W. Genesee) tied for seventh in the pole vault with a school record 2.46 meters.

Buffalo State will compete at the SUNYAC Championships in Fredonia next weekend.
