Outdoor Track and Field Places Third, Fourth at SUNYAC Championships

CORTLAND, NY—Buffalo State captured eight individual and relay championships this weekend at the SUNYAC Championships at Cortland, with the men placing third of eight teams, and the women fourth of eight.

Ray Peoples (Buffalo/ Cleveland Hill), Mario Hicks (Corning/ Corning West), Joe Russell (N. Tonawanda/ N. Tonawanda) and Xavier Mateen (New Rochelle/ New Rochelle) teamed to win the 4x100-meter relay in 42.37 seconds. Bengals placed one-two-five in the long jump, with Tim Diegelman (Clarence/ Clarence) earning the crown (6.73m), Ali Abdul-Matin (Troy/ Troy) finishing second (6.72m), and Ray Shadowens (Troup, TX/ Arp) showing fifth (6.43m). Hicks won the 110-meter hurdles with an NCAA provisional time of 14.95 seconds. Hicks was also fifth (10.90) in the 100-meter dash, behind Mateen (10.78) and Peoples (10.81) who were second and third respectively. Shadowens was third in the 110-meter hurdles (15.36). Willie Jones (Cheektowaga/ Amherst) was second in the high jump (1.95m).

Mateen added a fourth-place finish in the 200-meter dash (22.08), Joe Wooley (Buffalo/ Sweet Home) was fourth in the triple jump (13.64m), and John Tammaro (Buffalo/St. Mary’s of Lancaster) was fifth in the javelin (45.70m). (Puka Hoching (Gouverneur/ Gouverneur) and Matt Geller (Centerpoint/ Harborfields) were fourth (12.85m) and fifth (12.70m) respectively in the shot put. Geller and Hoching reversed their order in the discus, placing fourth (40.26m) and fifth (39.72m) respectively.

For the women, Latoya D. Edwards (Brooklyn/ Clara Barton) crossed first in the 100-meter dash with a school record and NCAA provisional time of 12.02 seconds. She was also third in the 400-meter hurdles (1:05.24). Lavonne Barfield (Rochester/Wilson Magnet) captured a SUNYAC title in the long jump with an NCAA provisional distance of 5.54 meters, and was second in the triple jump (10.82m). Anika Niles (Brooklyn/ Samuel J. Tilden) and Katya Marin (Mt. Vernon/ Mt. Vernon) claimed the top two spots in the 200-meter dash in 25.24 and 25.32 respectively, both running NCAA provisional times. Marin, Edwards, Niles and Taniqua Hollingsworth (Buffalo/East) won the 4x100-meter relay with a school record and NCAA provisional time of 48.05. Kelly Tooley (Cicero/CNS) also was third in the discus (35.83m).

Chenell Coleman (Buffalo/ McKinley) had a pair of third-place finishes in the 200-meter dash (25.50) and the 100-meter dash (12.42). Marin was also second in the 400-meter dash (58.56). Hollingsworth was fourth in the 100-meter dash (12.56), and Jamie Abbott (Pulaski/ Pulaski) was fourth in the javelin (29.01m). Dana Migliorino (Wayne, NJ/ Wayne Valley) broke her own school record in the pole vault, placing sixth, clearing 2.68 meters.

Buffalo State will next compete at the NYSCTC Championships at the University of Rochester next Friday and Saturday.
