Philharmonia Announces New Director, Call for Musicians

The Music Department has named Joseph Peters, principal oboist of the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra, as the second music director of the Buffalo State Philharmonia orchestra. Peters replaces Paul Ferington, founding director, who led the orchestra for the past six years.

“We are excited to welcome Maestro Peters to our faculty,” said Emily Boyce, associate professor and chair of music. “His energy and vision for the future of the Buffalo State Philharmonia makes him an outstanding choice to follow in the footsteps of Maestro Ferington. The Music Department and the entire Western New York community will benefit from his world-class musicianship and pedagogical skill.”

An oboist and conductor, Peters was an oboe fellow with the New World Symphony for three years, during which time he performed extensively in Miami Beach, Florida, and conducted multiple performances at the New World Symphony.

The Philharmonia orchestra is composed of Buffalo State music majors, non-music majors, faculty members, professional area musicians, local music educators, and community enthusiasts who are committed to performing the symphonic repertoire at a high level.

Community musicians are invited to audition for fall 2015 membership on Monday, August 31, from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. For the audition, musicians should select one orchestral excerpt and prepare a short solo piece (three minutes maximum, no accompaniment required). To arrange an audition, please e-mail Ellen Barnum, Philharmonia manager, at bscphil@gmail.com.

The Philharmonia’s fall concert will be held Tuesday, November 17.
