The Buffalo State Philharmonia’s concert on Wednesday, March 16, will feature the winners of the orchestra’s annual Young Artist Concerto Competition. Buffalo State students Nicholas Irion, baritone, and Rachel Birkman, clarinet, will join the Philharmonia and director Daniel Bassin for a program featuring Sibelius's Karelia Suite and Grieg's Peer Gynt at 7:30 p.m. in the Performing Arts Center at Rockwell Hall.
“The opportunity to perform as a soloist with an orchestra of this caliber is rare,” said Emily Boyce, chair and associate professor of music. “The Music Department is thrilled to be able to showcase our talented and hard-working students.”
The Philharmonia orchestra is composed of Buffalo State music majors, non-music majors, faculty members, area musicians, and local music educators who are committed to performing the symphonic repertoire at a high level.
In addition to its educational value, the orchestra has proved to be a great collaboration of campus and community. Experienced musicians from the region have been drawn to the orchestra as a way to continue to play their instruments.
The Young Artist Competition is open to currently enrolled students performing solo instruments or vocals. Applicants are judged by professionals outside of the Music Department and evaluated on proficiency and aptitude.
“The Philharmonia Orchestra provides an outstanding artistic and pedagogical experience under Maestro Bassin,” said Boyce. “We hope this year’s winners will inspire others to achieve the level of professionalism required to perform in a setting like this.”
General admissions tickets are $10. Buffalo State students are admitted for free but must obtain a ticket through the Rockwell Hall Box Office. Call (716) 878-3005 for tickets or purchase them online.
