Poetry, Art, and Storytelling Celebrate Native American Culture

A series of events celebrating Native American Heritage Month on campus begin on campus on April 14 when award-winning poet, author, and playwright Daniel David Moses presents “Breath Is the One Body: Making Literature Haunted by the Ghosts of Namerindian Oratures” in Bulger Communication Center W2. Moses will also present a reading at the Burchfield Penney Art Center auditorium on Sunday, April 17, at 2:00 p.m.

Charles Bachman, professor of English, specializes in Native American literature and contemporary drama. He has also published several books of poetry, including The Strange Lives of Mr. Shakovo. His fourth book of poetry, Blue Mountain Lake Poems, will be published this summer. He will present traditional Native American storytelling on Wednesday, April 20, at 8:00 p.m. in Bacon Hall 117.

Toronto native Bernice Gordon will present “When Raven Stole the Moon” and a discussion of traditional and digital art on Thursday, April 28, at 12:15 p.m. in E. H. Butler Library 210 and again at 7:30 p.m. in Classroom Building B118.

“We are very pleased to present work celebrating both traditional and contemporary Native American culture,” said Lisa Anselmi, associate professor and chair of the Anthropology Department, and coordinator of the indigenous studies minor.
