Poetry Reading at the Burchfield-Penney on December 2
The Burchfield-Penney Art Center is pleased to present a poetry reading on Sunday, December 2 at 2:00 p.m. featuring Barbara D. Holendar and Sam Magavern. The reading is free and open to the public.
Barbara D. Holender, a native of Buffalo, is the author of four volumes of poetry: Shivah Poems, Ladies of Genesis, Is This The Way To Athens? (1996 QRL award winner), and Our Last Best Perfect Day, also a children’s book in Hebrew, Ani Cli-zemer. Her poems have appeared in numerous journals and anthologies, including Lifecycles Vol.I, II (Jewish Lights), 80 on the 80’s (Ashland), Scarecrow Poetry (Ashland), Which Lilith? (Jason Aronson), NY Times Book of Verse (Macmillan), Helicon Nine Reader (Helicon Nine Editions), Reading Between The Lines (Jason Aronson), Jewish Mothers Tell Their Stories (Haworth), Celebrations (July Literary Press)
Sam Magavern is a writer whose work has appeared in many magazines including The Paris Review, The Partisan Review, Poetry, Salamander, Mudfish, The Beloit Poetry Journal, The Green Mountains Review, Compost, and The Forward. He wrote the CD-ROM story Ooh La La and the screenplay for The Last Word. A graduate of Harvard College and UCLA Law School, Magavern teaches at the University at Buffalo Law School. His non-fiction book, Primo Levi’s Cosmos, will be published by Palgrave Macmillan in 2009.

The new 84,000 square foot Burchfield-Penney, designed by Gwathmey Siegel and Associates Architects, is scheduled to open in the fall of 2008. The two-story building will be the Burchfield-Penney’s first free-standing home and have a major presence on Elmwood Avenue in the heart of Buffalo’s Museum District.
The Burchfield-Penney Art Center is accredited by the American Association of Museums and is supported in part with public funds from the New York State Council on the Arts, the Institute of Museum and Library Services and Erie County. Additional operating support is provided by Buffalo State College, the Elizabeth Elser Doolittle Trust, the James Carey Evans Endowment, the Mary A. H.
