Potsdam Works Overtime to Defeat Women's Basketball, 86-81

BUFFALO, NY—Cortney Poirier (Moira/Brushton-Moira) scored 21 points, including eight in the extra period, as visiting Potsdam (7-8/2-4) earned an 86-81 overtime victory at Buffalo State (4-11/1-5) in a SUNYAC game tonight at the Sports Arena.

Poirier added eight rebounds and seven assists. Maureen Curley (Madrid/Madrid-Waddington) also scored 21 points for the Bears. Rachel Graf (Elbridge/Jordan-Elbridge) had 11 points, including five in the extra period.

Darnika Moseley (Liverpool/Liverpool) led Buffalo State with 19 points and 11 rebounds, despite leaving the game with an injury with 6:27 left in regulation. Sophomore Shareese Hamer (Erie, PA/Strong Vincent) had a career-high 17 points and had 10 rebounds and six steals. Toya Parks (Brooklyn/MLK) and Jacey Brooks (Machias/Franklinville) each scored 15 points.

Buffalo State took and early six-point lead in the first half, but the first 20 minutes expired with Potsdam on top, 32-28. Potsdam led by as many as 14 points in the second half, and was up 65-59 with less than four minutes to play. Buffalo State rallied and led 69-67 with less than one minute to play, but the Bears’ Kathleen Lewis (Potsdam/Potsdam) hit a pair of free throws to even the score with 20 seconds remaining. Buffalo State’s 3-point attempt failed at the buzzer and sent the game to overtime. After a pair of early two-point leads for the Bengals, Potsdam took control of the extra period and held on for the victory.

Buffalo State will host Plattsburgh tomorrow at 2 p.m.
