Professional Development for K-12 Science Teachers
Science teachers in grades K through 12 will earn professional development hours this summer through a program presented by Buffalo State's Continuing Professional Studies Office.
Catherine Lange, assistant professor of earth science and science education, and Michele Parente, instructional support specialist for earth science and science education, have developed the Professional Development Program for Science Teachers with two goals in mind.
“We wanted to provide science teachers with new ideas and tools for teaching,” said Lange, “and to give them an opportunity to earn the hours necessary to maintain their professional certification.” Teachers with professional certification must complete 175 hours of professional development every five years to maintain their certification.
The seminars, which range from two to six contact hours, begin July 7 and will be held on the Buffalo State campus, at the Buffalo Museum of Science, at Reinstein Woods Nature Preserve, and at other nearby locations. The facilitators are or have been science teachers, and include Donald L. Birdd, professor emeritus of earth science and science education, and several Buffalo State alumni.
“We’re trying to help science teachers, or any teachers who teach science, improve their students’ understanding and enjoyment,” said Parente.
