Region's Largest Collaborative Art Exhibition Opens the Weekend of September 14-16
The work of 50 artists from Western New York and beyond will be unveiled over one weekend – September 14, 15 and 16 – at 12 galleries throughout Buffalo Niagara. Beyond/In Western New York 2007 expands the boundaries of its predecessor In Western New York to include artists from throughout the Eastern
Great Lakes region. The entire exhibition will be on view through October 20 (closing dates at individual venues vary).
After reviewing 955 submissions (45% from Canada), curatorial representatives from the 12 participating organizations made on site visits to 107 artists’ studios. Following the studio visits, the curators had a roundtable discussion to determine the final selection and the venue for each artist’s work. The number of submissions to Beyond/In Western New York 2007 increased by more than 20 per cent this year.
The exhibition opens over the course of one weekend from Friday, September 14 through Sunday, September 16. Admission to all openings will be free. For further information including suggested itineraries and maps, visit www.beyondinwny.org.

“The opportunity to be part of a process which included 14 curators from 12 very different organizations, to discuss the work of more than 950 artists from the expanded Western New York region was an amazing learning experience,” said Tom Holt, Project Curator, Burchfield-Penney Art Center. “To see outstanding work by so many artists currently working in this area, to share this experience with colleagues, and to present all of the different voices and perspectives in one exhibition is what makes Beyond/In so exciting.”
Major foundation sponsorship support for this multi-venue exhibition has been provided by generous grants from The John R. Oishei Foundation, The Baird Foundation, the Zemsky Family Foundation, and by a gift from Mariana Botero-Chason and Mark Chason.

The artwork spans a spectrum of art practices from traditional drawing, prints, painting, sculpture, and photography to video and 16 mm film, performance, and multimedia installations.
