RendezBlue at the Burchfield-Penney Art Center from October 11 – 14, 2007
The Burchfield-Penney Art Center is pleased to present the first in a new series of art happenings at the museum. RendezBlue, a program combining film, performance and music, will take place from Thursday October 11 through Sunday, October 14, 2007 and will focus on concepts of Architecture, Structure and Space. All programs are free of charge and will take place at the Burchfield-Penney, 3rd floor, Rockwell Hall, Buffalo State College. RendezBlue is sponsored by BlueCross BlueShield of Western New York.

Happy Hour featuring Chris Barr
As a part of the biennial exhibition Beyond/In Western New York, the Burchfield-Penney will present the work of Chris Barr. Barr creates artwork that addresses issues of personal space, environment, relationships and time. As a participating artist in the exhibition, Barr’s performance is based on a piece he is creating which involves him creating a mobile Karaoke machine and walking around the streets of Buffalo, interviewing people and taping them as they perform songs. The presentation of his work will include a lecture on the goals of this project and its outcomes, followed by an evening of Karaoke.

Doors Open Niagara
The inspiration for Doors Open Niagara had its origins in France where the first Doors Open event (La Journee Portes Ouvertes) took place in 1984. The idea soon spread to neighboring countries and has since expanded around the globe. Toronto was the first North American city to follow the European lead and launched a high profile event showcasing constructed heritage, architecture and design as a millennium project in 2000. Doors Open Niagara is organized by a steering committee of volunteers from both Canada and the United States in association with the Bi-national Tourism Alliance (BTA). The BTA is a tourism product and infrastructure development and training organization. It has been working with tourism, cultural and hospitality partners in the bi-national region since 2001 to develop the cross-border region into an internationally recognized, year-round cultural tourism destination. Bufffluxus Performance at 2:00 p.m.
Bufffluxus is a performance ensemble composed of musicians and aural artists that realizes verbo-visual sound poetry and Fluxus and sound events. The Works of Emmet Williams
Emmett Williams was one of the most long lived artists associated with the Fluxus movement. As an artist and poet, Williams collaborated with Daniel Spoerrri n the Darmstadt Circle of Concrete Poetry from 1957 to 1959. In the 1960s, Williams was the European coordinator of Fluxus and a founding member of the Domaine Poetique in Paris. He was a pioneer of Concrete Poetry, a fusing of visual, literary and musical practices into a verbal-voco-art form. While working with fellow Fluxus artist Dick Higgins at something Else Press Williams edited, An Anthology of Concrete Poetry.

Spoken Music
Spoken Music is concert of works by Dick Higgins, Allyson Knowles, Michael Basinski, and Jackson Maclow. Spoken Music refers to text based works by artists and poets that are both visual and sonic and are often called concrete poetry or visual poetry. These texts become musical notations which are used by performers to present sound pieces in the same spirit as a musical composition.

Concert of Works by Edgar Varese (1883-1965) and Iannis Xenakis (1922-2001).
Jan Williams is a percussion soloist and conductor. Composers who have written works especially for him include Lukas Foss, John Cage, Elliott Carter, Joel Chadabe, Morton Feldman, Orlando Garcia, Gustavo Matamoros, Luis de Pablo, Frederic Rzewski, Nils Vigeland, and Iannis Xenakis. He has toured extensively as a percussion soloist and conductor throughout the United States, Europe, New Zealand and Australia and has recorded for Columbia, Vox/Turnabout, Desto, Lovely Music, Spectrum, Wergo, DGG, Orion, Hat-Art, OO, New World, Deep Listening, EMF and Mode Records. He served as Co-Artistic Director of the North American New Music Festival, with Yvar Mikhashoff, from 1985-1991. He is professor emeritus at the University at Buffalo where he directed the percussion program for 30 years and served as Chair of the Music Department from 1980-84. He is Trustee of the Yvar Mikhashoff Trust for New Music.

She has several years of management experiences in the private sector, and has held various positions in the environmental not-for-profit sector. Gladu is a partner in ECOCIT?, a consulting firm which is setting the standard for urban housing, with aggressively green, innovatively designed, urban homes.

The new 84,000 square foot Burchfield-Penney, designed by Gwathmey Siegel and Associates Architects, is scheduled to open in the summer of 2008.
