Rowan Topples Football, 48-27
GLASSBORO, NJ—Rowan (4-2/2-1) piled up 455 yards of total offense en route to a convincing 48-27 rout over visiting Buffalo State (2-4/1-3), today in a New Jersey Athletic Conference contest at John Page Field.
Buffalo State quarterback Dan Aquilio (Depew/Depew) was 15 of 36 for 216 yards and three touchdowns. Greg Meyer (Lancaster/Lancaster) had three catches for 75 yards, including two touchdown grabs of 37 and 36 yards. Jarrett Smith (Beacon/Beacon) added three catches for 70 yards, with a 41-yard touchdown. Scott Forster (E. Otto/Catt.-Little Valley) led the Bengals’ defense with a career-high 16 tackles and an interception. Matt Pacana (N. Tonawanda/N. Tonawanda) added 10 stops, and Peter Nguyen (Buffalo/South Park) had seven tackles and his fourth interception of the season.
Ulysses Encarnacion and Rob Richardson paced the Rowan offensive attack on the ground, each surpassing the 100-yard mark. Encarnacion had 124 yards on 14 carries with a score, and Richardson gained 101 yards on 19 attempts. Quarterback Tim Hagerty was 13 of 21 for 149 yards and three touchdowns and also rushed for two scores.
Rowan totaled 306 rushing yards, compared to just 60 by Buffalo State. The Bengals finished the game with 285 total yards.
Rowan opened the scoring with a 7-yard touchdown pass from Hagerty to Billy Magill on its second possession to take a 7-0 lead. The Bengals answered on their ensuing possession with the first of Meyer’s two touchdowns, but a failed extra point left the Bengals trailing 7-6.
That was as close as the Bengals would get, as the Profs ripped of 27-straight points, scoring touchdowns on four of its next six possessions, to claim a 34-6 lead early in the second half. The teams traded touchdowns from there, with back-up quarterback Jeremy Mountain (Cheektowaga/Maryvale) completing the scoring with a 5-yard keeper with 31 seconds remaining.
“We played a very good football team today,” said Buffalo State Coach Paul Shaffner. “We lacked consistency and discipline and a good team will take advantage of that. I am still very proud of this team. We fought hard for 60 minutes and think we are still on the right course.”
Buffalo State host William Patterson next Saturday at 1 p.m.
