Buffalo State's swimming and diving team announced its 2004-05 captains, naming Marie Ryer (Buffalo/Hutch Tech) and Mindy Wood (Middlesex/Marcus Whitman) co-captains on the women's side, and Richard Gaczewski (N. Tonawanda/N. Tonawanda) and David Papke (Woodlawn/St. Francis) the leaders of the men's team.

Ryer is the lone senior on the women's roster. A four-year member of the Bengals' squad, she is a sprint freestyle specialist. Wood, just a sophomore, has already claimed school records in the 1,000 and 1,650 free and has also established herself as a more versatile swimmer, competing in the 400 individual medley.

Gaczewski and Papke are both entering their junior seasons. Gaczewski is an excellent all-around swimmer that has the potential to score points in almost any event at the conference meet. Twice a top-eight finisher in the 1,650 free, his other strong events include the 100 and 200 butterfly and the individual medley. Papke is the team's leader in the sprints and is also adds strength in the breaststroke and individual medley.

Buffalo State will open its 2004-05 season this Saturday with a home meet against Geneseo, the defending SUNYAC Champions.
