Book artist and Buffalo State alumnus Richard Kegler, ’92 will debut his new documentary, Making Faces: Metal Type in the 21st Century, Sunday, March 20, at 1:00 p.m. at the Burchfield Penney Art Center.

Part of the Buffalo Small Press Book Fair weekend of events, Kegler’s film documents the work process of the late Canadian graphic artist and type designer Jim Rimmer.

A graphic designer whose career spanned over 50 years, Rimmer was one of the few craftsmen who possessed the skills needed to create a typeface in both hand-set metal and digital formats.

In 2008, Kegler’s computer font company, P22 type foundry, commissioned Rimmer to create a new type design, RTF Stern. The film documents the creation of the typeface from the preliminary sketches through the cutting and casting of a single letter, “k.”

Kegler will introduce the film and answer questions after the screening.
