Selection Process for <em>Beyond/In Western New York 2005</em> Exhibition Announced
The Albright-Knox Art Gallery and the Burchfield-Penney Art Center along with 10 local visual arts institutions have agreed to join forces in a new endeavor, Beyond/In Western New York 2005, that will greatly expand the biennial In Western New York exhibition. Applications are due Monday, March 1, 2004.
Big Orbit Gallery, Buffalo Arts Studio, Carnegie Art Center, Castellani Art Museum, CEPA Gallery, El Museo Francisco Oller Diego Rivera, Hallwalls Center for Contemporary Art, Langston Hughes Institute, Squeaky Wheel, and UB Anderson Gallery will, along with the Albright-Knox and Burchfield-Penney, be both co-organizers and co-curators, and will provide additional venues for Beyond/In Western New York 2005, the new region-wide invitational exhibition.
Like the Albright-Knox Art Gallery and Burchfield-Penney, these institutions are strongly committed to the art and artists of Western New York. This collaboration will propel In Western New York, which was limited to celebrating the accomplishments of artists residing in the eight counties of Western New York, into the 21st-century. Beyond/In Western New York 2005 will expand the geographical parameters of previous regional exhibitions to encompass multi-points North, South, East and West by showcasing emerging and established artists from Central New York, Southern Ontario, Northeastern Ohio, and Northwestern Pennsylvania.
This larger biennial offers curators the opportunity to take a closer look at the work being produced in the area, resulting in an exhibition that will not just be a concentrated look at artists living in the Western New York area but will provide a broader and more in-depth look at the vibrant artistic community that makes up the Lake Erie, Lake Ontario, and Southern Ontario regions, said Albright-Knox Art Gallery Director Louis Grachos.
Beyond/In Western New York 2005 will premiere at staggered openings at each of the institutions during the weekends April 15-16 and April 23-24 and will remain on view at all venues through Wednesday, June 15, 2005.
Beyond/In Western New York 2005 Selection Process
Due to the magnitude of this project, the selection process is a lengthy one. A committee of curators representing each of the participating institutions will review all submissions. After an initial review, studio visits will be made to determine the final list of participants. Once selections have been made, the committee will choose the appropriate exhibition site for each artists work.
The call for submissions is open to both emerging and established artists. Artists working in all media--film, installation, multi media, painting, photography, printmaking, sculpture, and video--are encouraged to submit.
Submission guidelines:
*Completed application form
*Checklist of slides and/or works on videotape/CD-ROM being submitted
*One page r?sum?
*One page artist statement
*10-20 slides clearly labeled with artists name, title of each work, date, dimensions, medium, and top indicated and/or VHS video tape (also for film clips) no more than 10 minutes in length and/or digital images on CD-ROM.
To ensure the return of slides and videotapes, please include a stamped, self-addressed 9x12 inch envelope. Any entry without a stamped, self-addressed envelope will not be returned to the applicant.
