"The biological recovery of Sudbury lakes from historical metal damage: evaluation, trends and emerging stressors"

The biological recovery of Sudbury lakes from historical impacts of copper and nickel smelters has been slow and incomplete; despite the reductions in metal concentrations in the water achieved over the past thirty years, Daphniids (Crustacea, Cladocera) are still missing in many lakes. To determine if the current copper and nickel concentrations are hindering daphnid recovery, five lakes ranging in metal contamination were selected to test the performance of four species of Daphniids native of the Canadian Shield. The findings suggest that sub-lethal effects are operating at digestive level, impairing the Daphniids' ability to cope with physiological demands and environmental stress, and that those effects are influenced by the sodium and calcium levels present in the lakes in the Sudbury region.
