Six Buffalo State Soccer Players Earn All-SUNYAC Honors
Six members of Buffalo State's soccer programs were honored by the State University of New York Athletic Conference today as All-SUNYAC performers, including two men and four women.
Prisco Houndanon (Togo, W. Africa) was the lone First Team selection. The junior biology major paced the Bengals with a team-high seven goals and 21 points. In nine SUNYAC games, he had one goal and five assists. Matt Ketchum (Churchville/Churchville-Chili) also represented the Bengals' men's team as an Honorable Mention pick. The junior elementary education major anchored the Bengals defensive efforts that allowed just 1.98 goals-against-per-game. He also added a goal and an assist, and played in all 17 games.
Senior Gina Monaco (Niagara Falls/Niagara Falls) and junior Emily Galiulo (Utica/TR Proctor) both represented the women's team as Second Team honorees. Monaco, a childhood education major, finished her career as the Bengals' all-time leading scorer with 76 goals and 175 points, more than twice as many points as any other player in school history. A four-time All-SUNYAC selection, she led the conference with 21 goals and 50 points and was second in conference only scoring with 10 goals and 22 points in nine games. Galiulo, an elementary education major, led a physical Buffalo State defense that only allowed 19 goals in 17 games.
Senior Liz Jacobsen (Gresham, OR/Sam Barlow) and sophomore Katie Melsert (Burnt Hills/Burnt Hills) were each named Honorable Mention. Jacobsen, a health and wellness major, made an instant impact with the Bengals after transferring this semester. She finished second on the team with 15 goals and 38 points, and was tied for sixth in SUNYAC scoring with 17 points in 10 league games. Melsert anchored the Bengals' goalkeeping efforts, playing all but 17 of the more that 1,500 minutes of game time this season. The forensic chemistry major posted a .854 save percentage, a 1.11 goals-against-average and had four shutouts.
Buffalo State's men's team finished the year with a 7-7-4 overall record, putting together back-to-back .500 or better seasons for the first time since 1983-84. The women's team assembled its finest season in 20 years with an 8-7-2 overall record, marking the team's first winning season since going 11-7-1 in 1985.
