Softball Blanked by Brockport in SUNYAC First Round
PLATTSBURGH, NY—Buffalo State (25-14) out-hit Brockport (23-12) 8-6, but could not cash in, stranding nine runners on base in a 4-0 loss in the opening round of the double-elimination SUNYAC Championships today at Plattsburgh.
Brockport opened the game with three hits in the top of the first inning and jumped out to an early 2-0 lead. The Golden Eagles added two more runs in the fifth, and Buffalo State could not find an answer. The Bengals had runners reach third base in both the fifth and sixth innings, but could not score, before having the top of the lineup retired in order in the seventh.
Freshman Arielle Austin (Smithtown/ Smithtown West) led the Bengals’ bats, going 2 for 4 with a double. Aimee Fisher (Hamburg/ Frontier) suffered the loss, allowing four hits and four earned runs in 4 2/3 innings. Jenna Frieling (E. Amherst/ Williamsville North) threw 2 1/3 innings of scoreless relief, allowing two hits, extending her consecutive shutout inning streak to more than 20.
Buffalo State will look to stay alive in the tournament when it faces No. 1 Plattsburgh tomorrow at 9 a.m. Plattsburgh won its first game this morning, defeating sixth-seeded Oswego, 2-1, on a walk-off two-run homerun in the bottom of the seventh inning.
