CORTLAND, NY--Buffalo State (27-10) stayed alive in the double-elimination SUNYAC championship with an upset win over top-seeded Cortland, 5-1, ending the Red Dragons’ 23-game winning streak in the opener, and then made short work of Geneseo, eliminating the Knights with a 9-1, five-inning win, today at Cortland.

In the morning game, Cortland opened the scoring with a run in the top of the third, but Buffalo State evened the score with a run in the bottom of the inning. The Bengals pulled ahead with a two-out, four-run rally in the fifth inning that included a two-run homerun by Laurie Hutten (Tonawanda/Kenmore West). Jolene Banach (Cheektowaga/Maryvale) was 2 for 3 with a run scored, and Jenna Schwartzmeyer (Williamsville/Williamsville South) was 1 for 2 with two RBIs. Aimee Fisher (Hamburg/Frontier) was 1 for 3 with a solo homer in the third and was the winning pitcher, allowing just four hits with six strikeouts.

Buffalo State made the most of seven hits in the second game, scoring nine times. After taking an early 3-1 lead, the Bengals blew the game open with three runs in both the fourth and fifth innings. Fisher was 2 for 2 with three RBIs. Lauren Mruk (Lancaster/Lancaster) went 1 for 3 with three RBIs, Jessica Mooney (Tonawanda/Kenmore West) was 1 for 2 with two RBIs, and Jordan Banach (Cheektowaga Maryvale) was 1 for 3 with a solo homerun.

Buffalo State will face Plattsburgh tomorrow at 1:30 p.m.
