Softball Edges Cortland in Opener, Falls in Nightcap

BUFFALO, NY—Buffalo State (20-12/12-6) needed 11 innings to dispose of Cortland (27-9/17-3), 1-0, in the opener, but fell 5-4 in the nightcap today at Bengal Field.

Aimee Fisher (Hamburg/ Frontier) was outstanding on the mound, scattering six hits over 11 innings with five strikeouts in her third shutout of the season. Fisher also had the winning RBI with a bases-loaded walk in the bottom of the 11th. Jolene Banach (Cheektowaga/ Maryvale) scored the winning run and had a double, one of just four Bengal hits in the game.

Buffalo State plated three runs in the first inning of the second game, and extended the lead to 4-0 in the third. Cortland rallied, however, with a run in the fifth, two in the sixth and two more in the seventh, cashing in on 11 hits and five Buffalo State errors. Marissa Mariano (Williamsville/ Mt. St. Mary) was 1 for 2 with a double and two RBIs. Jessica Mooney (Tonawanda/ Kenmore West) was also 1 for 2 with a double. Nicole Maher (Waterloo/ Waterloo) was 1 for 2 with an RBI, before leaving the game in the fifth with an injury. Jenna Frieling (E. Amherst/ Williamsville North) took the loss, allowing three earned runs.

Buffalo State will host Nazareth in a non-league doubleheader on Friday.
