Softball Explodes in Game 2 for Split Against Nazareth

BUFFALO, NY—After only mustering one infield single in the first game, Buffalo State (21-13) tallied 13 hits in the nightcap to earn a split against visiting Nazareth (18-18), dropping a 2-1 decision before winning 8-0 in six innings.

Lisa Nazarenko (Victor/ Victor) was the star of the opening game, pacing Nazareth to the 2-1 victory. Nazarenko tossed a complete game one-hitter, allowing just a seventh-inning, infield bunt single, while striking out 12 Bengal batters. She also blasted a solo homerun in the first inning and doubled in the second to set up the winning run on an RBI double by Christa Harris (Liverpool/ Liverpool). Buffalo State scored its lone run in the fifth inning. Courtney Keleher (Tonawanda/ Kenmore West) walked to start the inning, advanced to third on a errant throw on a pick-off attempt, and later scored on an RBI fielder’s choice by Aimee Fisher (Hamburg/ Frontier). Fisher also took the hard-luck loss on the mound, allowing just four hits with four strikeouts.

Buffalo State jumped all over the Golden Flyers in the late game, plating six runs in the first inning. Christina Tschari (Clarence/ Clarence) was 2 for 3 with three RBIs to lead the Bengals. Carly Lopez (Oriskany/ Oriskany), Jolene Banach (Cheektowaga/ Maryvale), Arielle Austin (Smithtown/ Smithtown West) and Keleher all added two hits each for Buffalo State. Jenna Frieling (E. Amherst/ Williamsville North) posted her first shutout of the season in the win, allowing just four hits with five strikeouts.

Buffalo State will return to SUNYAC play tomorrow with a doubleheader at Morrisville State.
