Softball Holds on to Sweep RIT
BUFFALO, NY—Buffalo State (14-4) withstood a late defensive lapse and RIT (6-12) rally to hold on to complete the sweep, winning 4-1 and 5-4, in a pair of non-conference games today at Bengal Field.
RIT opened with a 1-0 lead in the first game, but Buffalo State answered with two runs in the bottom of the first inning and coasted to the 4-1 victory. Nicole Sabuda (Orchard Park/Orchard Park) recorded the win on the mound, allowing just three hits and only one after the first inning. She also had three strikeouts. Jolene Banach (Cheektowaga/Maryvale) paced the offense, going 2 for 4 with a double, an RBI and two runs scored. Lauren Mruk (Lancaster/Lancaster) also had a double and an RBI.
In the second game, Buffalo State raced out to a 4-0 lead and led 5-1 entering the seventh inning. RIT capitalized on three Bengal errors in the wet conditions and closed the gap to 5-4 with no outs, but Jenna Schwartzmeyer (Williamsville/Williamsville South) got out of the jam with a strikeout and started a 1-6-3 double play to end the game. She earned her first collegiate victory, scattering six hits with three strikeouts and two earned runs. Sophomore Becky Shank (Williamsville/Williamsville East) had her first career hit, belting a three-run double in the first inning. Jolene Banach was 2 for 3 with two doubles and an RBI, and Sabuda was 2 for 2 with a run.
Buffalo State will travel to Cortland on Friday for a SUNYAC doubleheader beginning at 3 p.m.
