FT. MYERS, Fla.—Buffalo State (9-3) closed out its spring trip today, falling to Wisconsin-Superior, 3-1, in the opener, but closed with a 4-0 win over Carleton (Minn.) in the late game at the Cape Coral Sports Complex.

UW-Superior scored all three of its runs in the fifth inning and then weathered the Bengals’ rally attempt. Buffalo State scored its lone run on an RBI-single by Lindsey Matheis (Hamburg/Williamsville South) in the sixth, but the Bengals could not complete the comeback as they stranded a pair of runners in the sixth and seventh innings. Matheis was 2 for 2 with a walk. Laurie Hutten (Tonawanda/Kenmore West) was 2 for 4 with a run scored. Aimee Fisher (Hamburg/Frontier) suffered her first loss of the season on the mound, allowing five hits and two earned runs while striking out five.

In the second game, Buffalo State scored two runs in the first inning and added two more in the third before coasting to the 4-0 victory. Jolene Banach (Cheektowaga/Maryvale) led the Bengals’ offense going 3 for 3 with two runs scored. Lauren Mruk (Lancaster/Lancaster) was 2 for 2 with two RBIs, and Hutten added a double and a stolen base. Nicole Sabuda (Orchard Park/Orchard Park) was the winning pitcher, giving up just three hits.

Buffalo State will open the northern portion of its schedule next Friday at conference-rival SUNYIT.
