Softball Stays Alive at SUNYAC Championships; Defeats Cortland and Geneseo
Buffalo State upset top-seeded host Cortland, 4-2, this morning, and used an extra inning to defeat Geneseo, 5-4, this afternoon at the SUNYAC Championshipsto stay alive in the double-elimination tournament.
In the first game, the Bengals opened the scoring with three runs in the second inning on four hits, including a two-RBI single by Tiffany Ciolek (Limestone/Salamanca) and a run-scoring double by Laurie Hutten (Tonawanda/Kenmore West). Cortland closed the gap to 3-2 in the fourth inning, but Lauren Mruk (Lancaster/Lancaster) gave the Bengals an insurance run with a solo-homerun in the top of the fifth. Kristen Scheffold (Lancaster/Lancaster) earned the win on the mound, allowing just six hits and one earned run, while striking out five. Ciolek and Nadine Sirianni (Niagara Falls/Niagara Falls) were both 2-for-3, and Lindsey Matheis (Hamburg/Williamsville South) was 2-for-4.
In the late game, Hutten led off the bottom of the eighth inning with a single and advanced to third base on a pair of infield outs, before Mruk hit a game-winning RBI single past a sprawling shortstop to give Buffalo State the 5-4 win. Geneseo led 2-0 and 3-2 early in the game, before the Bengals took their first lead at 4-3 in the fourth inning when Heidi Rammacher (Angola/Lakeshore) tripled and later scored on a wild pitch. Geneseo knotted the score with a run-scoring double in the seventh inning. Sirianni was 2-for-4 for Buffalo State with a double and two RBI. Hutten was also 2-for-4 with two runs scored. Scheffold earned her second win of the day, pitching five and two-thirds innings of relief, and allowing just two hits and one run.
Buffalo State improved to 26-13 and will face Oneonta, the only unbeaten team remaining in the tournament, tomorrow morning at 10 a.m. Oneonta defeated the Bengals yesterday 3-0 in eight innings.
