Softball Works Extra to Sweep Fredonia
FREDONIA, NY--Buffalo State (21-7/11-3) raced past Fredonia (11-17/5-11) 11-5 in the opener, and then needed an extra inning to win the second game, 5-4 in eight, to complete the road sweep today.
After taking an early 2-1 lead in the opener, the Bengals exploded to score nine runs in the fourth inning on eight hits and three Fredonia errors, to cruise to the six-run victory. Nicole Sabuda (Orchard Park/Orchard Park) led the offense, going 3 for 4 with a double and an RBI and also earned the win on the mound, allowing 10 hits and three earned runs. Lauren Mruk (Lancaster/Lancaster) and Jordan Banach (Cheektowaga/Maryvale) each went 2 for 4, and Laurie Hutten (Tonawanda/Kenmore West) was 1 for 4 with her first career grand slam.
The Bengals led 3-1 through five innings in the nightcap, but the Blue Devils rallied to tie in the sixth. The Blue Devils pulled ahead in the seventh, but Jolene Banach (Cheektowaga/Maryvale) evened the score with a two-out homerun in the seventh to force the extra inning, where Sabuda scored the winning run on a two-out wild pitch. Aimee Fisher (Hamburg/Frontier) earned the win in the circle, allowing seven hits and just one earned run with four strikeouts. Jolene Banach was 3 for 4 with the homer and three RBIs. Mruk, Fisher, Hutten and Christina Tschari (Williamsville/Clarence) were all 2 for 4.
Buffalo State will visit New Paltz for another conference doubleheader on Saturday.
