The Sun Rises at the Planetarium
The Whitworth Ferguson Planetarium has just installed a new lighting system, the first of its kind in a planetarium.
The ChromaCove system, designed by Raven Systems Design, Inc., incorporates state-of-the-art software and hardware that will enhance the planetarium’s capabilities, including the simulation of sunrises, sunsets, and other sky effects.
In honor of President Podolefsky’s inauguration, the planetarium is launching the new system and offering free admission for Buffalo State students, faculty, and staff for the planetarium’s regularly scheduled public shows on October 29 and 30.
“This new lighting system will really improve the planetarium ,” said Kevin Williams, the planetarium’s director, a planetary geologist, and assistant professor of earth sciences and science education. “The LEDs are much brighter than LED systems at other planetariums, and we can control 63 different lighting segments individually. We’re pleased to be able to introduce this system during the inaugural festivities.”
