Swimming and Diving Men and Women Sprint Past Canisius

Buffalo State's men's and women's swimming and diving teams each earned their first victories of the season, defeating Canisius in a dual meet at Kissinger Pool. The men claimed a 147-60 victory, while the women topped the Golden Griffins 116.5-86.5.

On the men's side, Buffalo State submitted a dominating performance, winning 12 of the 13 events. Sophomore Eric Hastings (Wilmington, DE/Mt. Pleasant) and freshman Kevin Buisman (Rochester/Penfield) were each double-winners for the Bengals. Hastings touched first in the 200 free (1:55.95) and in the 500 free (5:24.87). Buisman won the 200 individual medley (2:10.08) and the 100 breaststroke (1:06.38).

The women also had a strong showing, finishing first in seven of the 11 swimming events, but the highlight of the evening came in the diving exhibition. Freshman Nicole Rutkowski (Vanica, FL/Williamsville North) set new school records on both the one-meter (242.05) and the three-meter (252.80) boards. Marie Ryer (Buffalo/Hutch Tech), Sara Weinert (S. Byron/Byron-Bergen) and Katie Perusich (Kenmore/Kenmore East) were all double-winners. Ryer won the 50 free (26.73) and the 100 free (59.30). Weinert touched first in the 200 free (2:06.90) and the 500 free (5:39.26). Perusich captured the 200 individual medley (2:25.62) and the 100 butterfly (1:08.47).

Both Buffalo State teams improved to 1-1 on the season. The Bengals will return to action next Friday when will they travel to Penn State Behrend.
