Swimming and Diving Teams Split with Behrend
BUFFALO, NY—Buffalo State’s Elisabeth Hilzen (Glen Rock, NJ/Glen Rock) posted two first-place finishes to lead the women’s team to its first victory of the season as the Bengals defeated Penn State Behrend, 119-100, tonight at Kissinger Pool, while the men’s team dropped a 141-96 decision to the Lions.
Hilzen captured the 200-yard individual medley in 2:27.72 and also claimed the title in the 100-yard breaststroke, finishing in 1:15.44. Three other Bengals earned individual titles as Stacey Jones (Hamburg/Hamburg) won the 100-yard butterfly (1:06.63), Sarah Green (N. Tonawanda/Starpoint) took the 100-yard free (1:00.15) and Miranda Warner (Elmira/Horseheads) touched first in the 100-yard backstroke. The women’s 400-yard medley relay team of Warner, Hilzen, Jones and Green also won in a time of 4:28.91.
On the men’s side, Lance Thornton (Hastings/Hastings) took the top spot in the 50-yard freestyle in 23.34 and finished second in the 100-yard butterfly in 57.82. Kevin Buisman (Rochester/Penfield) and Rich Aguilo (Wantagh/Wantagh) also claimed first-place finishes in the 200-yard individual medley (2:13.85) and 100-yard free (1:00.15), respectively. Christopher Steinert (Lakeview/Frontier) was the lone Bengal diver and finished third off both the one- and three-meter boards.
Buffalo State’s women will host William Smith tomorrow at 1 p.m. The men will return to action next Friday when both teams travel to Pitt-Bradford for a 6 p.m. meet.
