Swimming & Diving Opens SUNYAC Championships

BUFFALO, NY—Buffalo State competed in the opening day of the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Championships today at the Erie Community College Flickinger Aquatic Center in downtown Buffalo. Through 12 total events, the Bengals men are ninth of nine teams, and the women are eighth.

On the men’s side, three individuals swam tonight. Tim Harroun (Tonawanda/ Tonawanda) placed 14th (2:06.55) in the 200-yard individual medley, and Kevin Buisman (Penfield/ Penfield) was 16th (2:08.33) in the same event. Rich Aguilo (Wantagh/ Wantagh) was 16th (22.84) in the 50-yard free. Aguilo, Harroun, Vince Wasneechak (Gorham, ME/ Lemoore CA) and Cory Skiba (Buffalo/ Kenmore West) teamed up in the 200-yard free relay, finishing eighth (1:32.71). Buisman, Harroun, Aguilo and Scott Banks (N. Tonawanda/ Niagara Wheatfield) competed in the 400-yard medley relay and touched sixth (3:48.09).

The only Bengals on the women’s side to participate in the evening finals were the two relays. Laura Pino (Niagara Falls/ Niagara Wheatfield), Ashley Remmes (Grand Island/ Grand Island), Kelly Swanson (Amherst/ Amherst) and Christina Jasek (N. Tonawanda/ N. Tonawanda) swam the 200-yard free relay and placed eighth (1:53.79). Pino, Remmes and Swanson also joined Elisabeth Hilzen (Glen Rock, NJ/ Glen Rock) in the 400-yard medley relay, finishing sixth (4:39.06).

The championship meet will continue tomorrow and conclude on Saturday. The prelims will begin at 10 a.m. and the finals will start at 6 p.m. each day.
