Ten Bengals Earn All-ACFC Honors; Three Garner First Team Recognition
Seniors Perry Taglienti (Depew/Lancaster) and Michael Holbok (Williamsville/St. Joe's) sophomore Jonathan Allen (Fayetteville/Fayetteville-Manlius) led 10 Buffalo State players honored by the six-team Atlantic Central Football Conference (ACFC), as all three were selected to the First Team.
Taglienti, a linebacker, was second in the ACFC with 109 tackles, becoming the first Bengals to surpass the 100-tackle plateau since 2000. He was also second on the team with 13 tackles for loss. Holbok anchored a dominant pass rush as the defensive end finished second in the ACFC with nine sacks and finished the season with 41 tackles, four forced fumbles and three blocked kicks. Allen was the leading receiver in the conference, as he made 48 catches for 547 yards and scored five touchdowns.
Seniors Mike Potter (Allegany/Salamanca) and Nick Warren (Cheektowaga/W. Seneca East), juniors Deryck Wrazen (Lakewood/Southwestern) and David Barabas (Cheektowaga/W. Seneca East), and freshman James Perkins (Troy/Troy) all represented the Bengals on the Second Team. Potter, a free safety, was third on the team with 70 tackles and finished fifth in the ACFC with a team-high five interceptions. Warren played strong safety and finished second on the Bengals with 83 tackles and added seven pass break-ups. Wrazen started all 10 games at left guard. He helped bolster an offensive line that cleared a path for the Bengals to rush for 936 yards and pass for 1,620 yards. Barabas led Buffalo State with 18 tackles behind the line of scrimmage resulting in a loss of 80 yards. The defensive end made 41 tackles and registered 5.5 sacks. Perkins had an impressive rookie campaign as he ran for 598 yards on 176 carries and added four touchdowns. He eclipsed the 100-yard mark in a pair of games and was named the league's rookie of the week after the Bengals win over Thiel.
Junior quarterback Mike Mikolaichik (Hilton/Hilton) and junior linebacker Hank Pirowski (Lackawanna/Lackawanna) rounded out the Bengals' honorees, as they were recognized as honorable mention. Mikolaichik threw for 1,598 yards and eight touchdowns and added 136 rushing yards and seven scores. Pirowski was fourth on the Bengals with 60 tackles, including 11 for loss.
Buffalo State finished 4-6 overall and placed fourth in its inaugural season in the ACFC with a 2-3 record.
