The Theater Department will deliver an interesting twist on the “wicked stepmother” story when it presents the U.S. premiere of The Stepmother, Wednesday, November 9, in the Donald Savage Building's Flexible Theater.

Written by Githa Sowerby, this little-known play has only been performed once in London and during the 2008 Shaw Festival in Canada.

The 11-member cast play tells the story of a conniving widower who marries a young heiress. While the husband's schemes nearly bankrupt the family, the heiress ends up caring deeply for his two daughters.

“It’s a play about duties to family and duties to oneself,” said director Donn Youngstrom, associate professor and chair of the Theater Department. “It’s also a fun melodrama. When I saw it at the Shaw, members of the audience were actually hissing at the husband. The play is compellingly written.”

The performance, which begins at 8:00 p.m., will run about two hours with a 10-minute intermission. Performances are November 9–12 and 16–19 at 8:00 p.m. and November 12 and 19 at 2:00 p.m.

Tickets cost $6 for Buffalo State College students; $10 for Buffalo State faculty, staff, and alumni, other students, and senior citizens; and $15 for the general public. Order tickets online, or call (716) 878-3005.
