Thruway Construction Information for Commencement Visitors

Share with...
If you plan on attending Buffalo State’s 138th Commencement ceremonies, Saturday, May 15, allow for extra time if traveling along the I-190 South.
An ongoing New York State Thruway Authority project has closed the I-190 southbound from Exit 14 (Ontario Street) to Exit 9 (Peace Bridge-Canada-Porter Avenue) on weekends. On commencement weekend, that stretch will be closed beginning at 7 p.m. on Friday, May 14, until 6 a.m. Monday, May 17.
Motorists traveling southbound on I-190 to Buffalo State will exit at Exit 14 (Ontario Street) and proceed south on Niagara Street (Route 266). Heading southbound on Niagara Street for approximately 1.2 miles, motorists can simply enter the Route 198 (Scajaquada Expressway) eastbound ramp to access campus.
Those traveling northbound on the I-190 will not be affected.
An additional road construction project along the I-190 could affect those traveling to campus on weekdays—including the days leading up to and following commencement. The ramp from southbound I-190 to eastbound Route 198 will be closed starting at 8 p.m. on Thursday, May 13, until noon on Thursday, May 27. A marked detour will direct motorists to Exit 9, where they will turn left onto Porter Avenue, cross the bridge over the Thruway and make another left to re-enter I-190 northbound. This will take drivers to Exit 11 where they can proceed onto Route 198 eastbound.
