Track and Field Claims Five Titles at Outdoor State Championships
ROCHESTER, NY—Mario Hicks (Corning/ Corning West) and Ray Peoples (Buffalo/ Cleveland Hill) were each a part of two of the Bengals’ five titles as Buffalo State competed at the NYSCTC Outdoor Track & Field Championships today at the University of Rochester. The men finished sixth of 15 teams, and the women were 10th of 14.
Hicks blazed to the crown in the 110-meter high hurdles with an NCAA provisional time of 14.87 seconds. Peoples crossed first in the 100-meter dash in 10.86 second. Hicks and Peoples also teamed with Xavier Mateen (New Rochelle/ New Rochelle) and Keith Henry (Galveston, TX. Ball) to win the 4x100-meter relay in 42.20 seconds. Henry added a second-place showing in the 200-meter dash (22.36), and Mateen was third in both the 100 (11.12) and 200-meter dashes (22.33). Joe Wooley (Amherst/ Sweet Home) placed second in the triple jump (13.61m), and Puka Hoching (Gouveneur/ Gouveneur) was second in the discus (42.93m). Ray Shadowens (Troup, TX/ Arp) was third in the 110-meter high hurdles (15.79), and Maurice Little (Newburgh/ Newburgh) was fourth in the 400-meter dash (49.40).
On the women's side, Latoya D. Edwards (Brooklyn/ Clara Barton) claimed the State Championship in the 100-meter dash with a provisional time of 12.23 seconds. Anika Niles (Brooklyn/ Samuel J. Tilden) won the 200-meter dash (25.35), while Katya Marin (Mt. Vernon/ Mt. Vernon) and Chenell Coleman (Buffalo/ McKinley) finished third (25.64) and fourth (26.09) respectively. Reya Russell (N. Tonawanda/ N. Tonawanda) added a fourth-place showing in the 100-meter hurdles (15.83), and Kelly Tooley (N. Syracuse/ CNS) was fourth in the discus (35.10m). Dana Migliorino (Wayne, NJ/ Wayne Valley) broke her own school record once again in the pole vault, placing tied for seventh, clearing 2.90 meters. Margaret Hughes (Elmira/ Elmira Free Academy) also set a school record in the 3,000-meter steeplechase, finishing 10th in 12:31.78.
Several Bengals will continue preparations for the NCAA Division III Championships at U. of Wisconsin-Oshkosh on May 22-24.
