Track and Field Competes at State Championship; Muise Qualifies for Nationals

Buffalo State had two athletes receive top honors at the NYSCTC Championships today at Brockport, as Justin Muise (Kenmore/Kenmore West) captured "Runner of the Meet" honors and Ken Ciolek (Limestone/Bradford Area) was named the "Rookie of the Meet." Buffalo State's men placed fifth of 15 teams, while the women finished tied for 14th of 15.

Muise's performance in the 400m dash was the highlight of the day as he captured a New York State Championship with an automatic NCAA qualifying time of 47.46. Ciolek won yesterday's javelin competition with a throw of 52.90 meters, and added a pair of seconds in the long jump (6.68m) and in the triple jump (13.60m) and a third place showing in the high jump (1.90m). Tim Giagios (Rochester/Gates-Chili) added a second place showing in the 400m hurdles (55.12). Mike Taylor (Cheektowaga/Maryvale) finished fourth in the triple jump (13.24m) and seventh in the long jump (6.28m), and Chris Lape (Millbrook/Millbrook) finished fifth in the javelin (47.80m). The Bengals' 4x100m relay team of Taylor, Giagios, Lape and Chantz Miles (Rochester/Greece-Olympia) finished third (42.65).

Muise will compete at the NCAA Division III Championships at Millikin University in Decatur, Ill. on May 21 and 22.
