Track & Field Makes Huge Strides at SUNYAC Championships; Hordge Named Outstanding Male Track Athlete

FREDONIA, NY—After placing seventh with both teams at the SUNYAC Championships last season, Buffalo State track & field grew leaps and bounds this season, with the women placing third of eight teams and the men finishing fourth at this weekend’s championship meet at Fredonia.

Willie Hordge (Buffalo/Forestbrook TX) and Toya Edwards (Brooklyn/Clara Barton) were each part of three SUNYAC titles for the Bengals. Hordge was named the Outstanding Male Track Athlete as he won the 100-meter dash with an NCAA qualifying time of 10.56 and had a provisional qualifying time winning the 200-meter dash in 21.71. He also anchored the winning 4x100-meter relay team (42.34) with Mario Hicks (Corning/Corning West), Shilah Richardson (Auburn/Auburn) and Joe Russell (N. Tonawanda/N. Tonawanda). Edwards also won the 100-meter (23.59) and 200-meter (26.47), and anchored the 4x100-meter winners (49.75) with Tiffany Aaron (Rochester/Wilson Magnet), Chelsea Prophet (Buffalo/daVinci) and LaVonne Barfield (Rochester/Wilson Magnet).

Tenisha Jones (Rochester/Wilson Magnet) led the other top women’s finishes, winning the triple jump with a new school record measurement of 11.01 meters. Jamie Abbott (Pulaski/Pulaski) was second in the discus (33.76m) and fourth in the javelin (28.76m). Jenelle Orosz (N. Tonawanda/N. Tonawanda) placed second in the high jump (1.55m), and Jameieka Price (Niagara Falls/Aviano American) was third in the 400-meter dash (59.33). Sarah Gedraitis (Lockport/Akron) added a fourth-place finish in the discus (37.13m), and Danielle Smelser (Plattsburgh/Plattsburgh) was fifth in the 1,500-meter run (5:00.53). Aaron was also sixth in the 100-meter (13.05) and seventh in the 200-meter (13.05). Prophet was sixth in the 100-meter hurdles (16.94) and seventh in the 100-meter dash (13.08), and Barfield was seventh in the triple jump (10.58m).

Hicks led a one-two-three Buffalo State finish in the 110-meter hurdles with a winning time of 15.64, followed by Ray Shadowens (Troup, TX/Arp) (15.81) and Russell (15.94). Hicks was also fifth in the 100-meter dash (11.26) and seventh in the 200-meter (23.20). John Tammaro (Ckeektowaga/St. Mary’s) and Tim Diegelman (Clarence/Clarence) finished third (45.08m) and fourth (44.54m) respectively in the javelin. Puka Hoching (Gouverneur/Gouverneur) was third in the discus (38.00m), Jim Sholley (Cheektowaga/JFK) was fourth in the 400-meter hurdles (57.42), and Joe Wooley (Amherst/Sweet Home) was sixth in the triple jump (12.88m).

Buffalo State will compete at the New York State Championships at Brockport next weekend.
