Track & Field Posts Best-Ever Results at Indoor SUNYACs
GENEVA, NY—Buffalo State’s track and field teams made school history at the SUNYAC Indoor Championships at Hobart/William Smith today with the men recording their highest finish ever, placing second of eight teams, and the women matching their finest results, showing third. The Bengals also won eight events, broke three school records and had four NCAA provisional qualifiers.
The men captured three individual championships and won one relay event. Mario Hicks (Corning/ Corning West) captured the 55-meter hurdles with an NCAA provisional time of 7.67 seconds. Ali Abdul-Matin (Troy/ Troy) won the triple jump with a provisional qualifying distance of 14.22 meters, and Willie Jones (Cheektowaga/ Amherst) won the high jump, clearing 1.98 meters. The 4x400-meter relay team of Xavier Mateen (New Rochelle/ New Rochelle), Maurice Little (Newburgh/ Newburgh), Keith Henry (Galveston, TX/ Ball) and Volter Dalzon (Pt. Chester/ Stepinac) also crossed first in 3:24.32.
On the women’s side, Latoya D. Edwards (Brooklyn/ Clara Barton) was the star of the day as part of three of the Bengals four first-place finished. Edwards won the 55-meter dash, with a provisional time of 7.28 seconds, won the 200-meter dash with a new school record time of 25.81 seconds, and anchored the winning 4x400-meter relay. In the relay, she teamed with Suzan Spence (Brooklyn/ Canarsie), Katya Marin (Mt. Vernon/ Mt. Vernon) and Anika Niles (Brooklyn/ Samuel J. Tilden) to set a new meet and school record with a time of 4:01.65. The time bettered the previous school best by more than nine seconds, and won the race by more than eight seconds. LaVonne Barfield (Rochester/ Wilson Magnet) also earned a championship in the long jump with a provisional distance of 5.48 meters.
Other top finishes for the men included: Ray Shadowens (Troup, TX/ Arp) (2nd in the 55-hurdles – 7.79), Tim Diegelman (Clarence/ Clarence) (2nd in the long jump – 6.78m), Henry (3rd in the 200-meter – 22.48), Dalzon (3rd in the 400-meter – 51.14) and Puka HoChing (Gouverneur/ Gouverneur) (3rd in the shot put – 13.62m).
Other highlight performances for the women included: Niles (2nd in the 55-meter – 7.46), Marin (2nd in the 200-meter – 26.32), Barfield (2nd in the triple jump – 10.95m), Taniqua Hollingsworth (Buffalo/ East) (3rd in the 200-meter – 26.59), and Sharesa Baldwin (Brooklyn/ Clara Barton) (3rd in the triple jump – 10.95m).
Buffalo State will compete at the NYSCTC Championships next weekend at St. Lawrence.
