Track & Field Wraps Up Day 1 at SUNYAC Championships

FREDONIA--Buffalo State's track and field teams competed in the opening day of the SUNYAC Championships today at Fredonia, and with just a handful of events completing finals, the men are fifth of eight and the women are sixth.

On the men's side, Tim Diegelman (Clarence/Clarence) led the way with a third-place showing in hte long jump (6.61m), and Ray Shadowens (Troup, TX/Arp) was eighth in the same event (6.45m). Puka Hoching (Gouverneur/Gouverneur) was sixth in the shot put (12.72m) and Jay Wingate (Henrietta/Rush-Henrietta) and Diegelman tied for sixth in the high jump (1.78m).

Sarah Gedraitis (Lockport/Akron) was the top finisher, placing second in the hammer throw, breaking her own school record at 41.64 meters. Candace Aaron (Coram/Longwood) was seventh in the hammer (37.61m). Kelly Tooley (N. Syracuse/CNS) and Jamie Abbott (Pulaski/Pulaski) were seventh (10.61m) and eighth (10.49m) respectively in the shot put. Nichia Horvath (Syracuse/West Genesee) was eighth in the pole vault (2.45m). Margaret Hughes (Elmira/Elmira Free) set a new school record in the 10,000-meter run (40:58.26).

The championship meet will conclude tomorrow.
