Two New Burchfield-Penney Exhibitions on View Oct. 27 - Jan. 20
Two important new exhibitions will open at the Burchfield-Penney Art Center at Buffalo State College on October 27. Neil Tetkowski and the Common Ground World Project celebrates the unified cooperation of United Nations members. Tenth Anniversary Selections from the Charles Rand Penney Collection of Western New York Art commemorates the 1991-92 gift to the Burchfield-Penney of a major collection of artwork.
Neil Tetkowski and the Common Ground World Project
Artist Neil Tetkowski organized the creation of a large ceramic mandala - a symbol of unity recognized throughout the world - formed by blending clay and sand submitted from 188 nations around the world. Tetkowski conceived of this collaborative project to represent the unified cooperation of these countries, each of which is a member of the United Nations. Tetkowski led Nitin Desai, the Under Secretary General of Economic and Social Affairs at the U.N., and representatives from many participating countries in creating the Common Ground World Mandala Monument at the United Nations Headquarters in New York as part of a performance in April 2000. During the event, participants placed tiles of fired clay from each country into a soft clay disk. Handprints of the oldest and youngest participants were placed in the center.
The mandala maquette with a display of the 188 clay samples, preliminary drawings, and another disk made from the world clay are included in the exhibition, as are earlier mandala-shaped works by Tetkowski from the Burchfield-Penney's collection.
Tetkowski has a B.F.A. from the SUNY College of Ceramics at Alfred University and an M.F.A. from Illinois State University. He has taught at various colleges including Buffalo State College. Tetkowski's work is exhibited internationally and included in such acclaimed collections as those of the American Craft Museum in New York, the Museum of Modern Art in Tokyo, the Palace of Culture in Warsaw, and the Renwick Gallery of the Smithsonian Institution in Washington D.C. He currently lives and maintains a studio in New York City.

Tenth Anniversary Selections from the Charles Rand Penney Collection of Western New York Art
An exhibition of selected important paintings, drawings, prints, and sculpture marks the tenth anniversary of Charles Rand Penney's gift of his Western New York art collection to the museum.
The exhibition includes Liz Tower's abstracted still-life painting Red Ladder (1968), the oil painting For Joseph, a Garden (1955) by Seymour Drumlevitch, and an enamel on metal sculpture by Duayne Hatchett titled Study for Larger Work in White (1975).
In 1991 and 1992 Dr. Penney, renowned collector, patron, lawyer, and world traveler, donated his collection of Western New York Art to the what was then called the Burchfield Art Center. The complete Western New York Collection is made up of 162 works by 110 artists. In 1994 he presented his collectionshe museum was rededicated as the Burchfield-Penney Art Center to honor Dr. Penney's patronage.
Charles Rand Penney: Profiles of an International Collector, to be shown November 14, at 6 p.m., is a one-hour videotape compilation of local, national, and international television programs that have featured Dr. Penney. The tape, compiled by Deborah More of Azar & More, Inc./ Multimedia Production, includes footage from programs produced by the BBC in England, the FOX Cable Network in New York, and segments of programs aired on area television stations such as WGRZ, WIVB, and WKBW. There are also segments of Artviews, an arts program that Dr. Penney hosted for the local cable station LCTV in Lockport, New York. The presentation is co-sponsored by the Buffalo Society of Artists.
