U.S. Navy Navigators to Present at Planetarium For Navy Week 2012

"Anchors aweigh, my boys. Anchors aweigh." Citizens throughout Buffalo will be singing along to this fighting song as Navy Week visits Buffalo September 10–17. Buffalo State will join the celebration on Friday, September 14, as several U.S. Navy navigators present "The U.S. Navy Navigating around the Globe for over 200 Years" in the Whitworth Ferguson Planetarium.

The navigators in attendance will bring a few navigation tools, share information on how navigating technologies have advanced, and explain how stars have been used in navigation.

"Historically the stars have been used by explorers to determine their location," said Kevin Williams, director of the planetarium and associate professor of earth sciences and science education. "Having this presentation in the planetarium is a nice collaboration between Buffalo State and our community, and brings this Navy Week event to our campus."

Navy Week 2012, which will occur in 15 cities, commemorates the bicentennial of the War of 1812.  Throughout the week, the Navy will put on multiple events throughout Buffalo, such as the planetarium visit, to share their stories, history, and experiences with those in attendance.
