Antonio Banderas, Jonah Hill, and Robin Williams will all make appearances at Buffalo State this semester. Well, they won’t actually be on campus, but they will be starring in the United Students Government (USG) Spring Movie Series.
Every month, USG will show a new movie in the Campbell Student Union Game Room. Movie screenings are free to students, start at 6:00 p.m., and include free popcorn. On January 25, students were spooked by Paranormal Activity 3. On February 15, they can get their vampire fix with Breaking Dawn. On March 14, The Sitter will be sure to stir some laughs, and on April 18, students can follow the adventures of Puss in Boots. Finally, on May 2, the excitement of the end of the semester will be complemented by the showing of Happy Feet 2.
The movies were selected by a vote among the Student Life Committee. “We wanted to pick movies that we thought best suited the student population here,” said Wilherne Benjamin, administrative vice president for student life for USG. “For students, it’s always work, work, and study, study. Although we’re in an academic environment, it’s important to have down time where they can kick back and relax.”
USG also hopes that events like the Spring Movie Series will encourage commuter students to spend more time on campus. “Oftentimes, commuters will just go to their classes and then leave,” Benjamin said. “We want to provide them with some activities that will allow them to spend more time on campus and get involved.”
In addition to the Spring Movie Series, USG has a lot of other exciting events planned for this semester, including Spring Fest, Carnival, Battle of the Orgs, and a speaker series. Each event is funded by the mandatory student activity fee.
